Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Learning Journey:

Our learning journey topic for the first half term is ‘We’re Going on a Journey!’.  We will have the opportunity to explore our very own Gilbert the Bus in school and then design, create and evaluate our own 3D models of Gilbert.  In geography we will undertake map work, learning to identify the 4 countries of the United Kingdom and we will use different media to recreate their flags.  In history we will look into old and new forms of transport.

During our second half term our Learning Journey topic will be ‘A Toy Story!’ where we will be designing toys with moving parts, and looking at old and new toys and placing them in chronological order


  • Naughty Bus – labelling and describing Naughty Bus
  • The Journey Home from Grandpa’s – Creating a story map, using adjectives
  • Follow the Swallow – Describing characters, writing instructions
  • Visual literacy around the story ‘Toy Story’ – retelling, letter writing and describing characters.
  • The Three Little Pigs – Writing captions, speech bubbles , retelling the story and letter writing
  • Toys in Space – Creating LOST posters, creating new characters, story maps, retelling


First Half term:

  • Place value – Counting to 10 forwards and backwards, read and write number to 10 in numbers and words, comparing sizes, identifying one more and one less, counting in twos
  • Addition and subtraction – addition and subtraction facts to 10, solving one step problems including missing numbers
  • Shape – recognising and naming 2D and 3D shape and describing position.


Second Half Term:

  • Place Value – counting to 20 forwards and backwards, count read and write numbers from 1-20 in numerals and words, comparing sizes, counting in 2s and 5s
  • Addition and Subtraction - addition and subtraction facts within 20, add and subtract 1 digit and 2 digit numbers to 20, solving one step problems including missing numbers



  • Identification of trees – Recognising and naming evergreen & deciduous trees
  • Naming and labelling parts of a plant
  • Identification of different types of birds and making bird feeds



1st Half – ‘We are Treasure Hunters’: Children will program a toy to move around a map to find buried treasure.  They will start thinking about algorithms and predict how their toy will move.

2nd Half – ‘We are TV Chefs: pupils will produce short videos of themselves

making a healthy meal or snack. They will also decompose a complex problem into smaller parts – an important idea from computer science.




Indoor P.E: Thursday

Children will explore travelling in different ways over a variety of apparatus, introducing simple movement phrases.

Outdoor P.E: Monday

Children will learn to be confident and safe in space.  They will explore new skills to suit the game they are playing e.g. throwing, kicking.
